About

Big W, established in 1964 as part of the Woolworths Group, is a prominent chain of discount department stores with over 176 locations across Australia. As their product offerings have expanded to include Big W Optometry and Party Store concepts, the need for refreshed branding and enhanced in-store experiences has grown.

Big W aimed to modernise its branding and store layouts, elevating its brand identity to stand out above the competition and deliver an enhanced customer shopping experience from start to finish. Externally, the focus was on upgrading outdated signage to align with the latest corporate branding guidelines. Internally, the goal was to roll out the 2.0 store format, featuring dynamic and clear signage for improved navigation and a more cohesive shopping journey.

The Project

The extensive scope of work involved both external and internal upgrades, delivered nationally across multiple locations. Key elements included:

  • External: Modernised signage on fascia’s, pylons, and entry portals, with additional “Direct to Boot” branding where required.
  • Internal: Development of the 2.0 store format, including large, suspended gantries with illuminated signage identifying key departments (e.g., Sports, Health & Beauty) and non-illuminated lettering for subcategories using recycled materials (e.g., Pets, Outdoor, Tech). Additional features included front-of-store signage designed to provide a clear and user-friendly experience for customers when entering and exiting the store. Lifestyle graphics, digital print vinyl wraps for self-checkout areas, and traditional signwriting were used to enhance area identification. Additionally, linemarking and improved wayfinding were incorporated to ensure greater convenience for customers throughout the store.

The Challenges

The project presented unique challenges, including a dynamic project scope with frequently evolving designs and requirements, bespoke and large-scale signage requiring precise manufacturing and assembly, tight deadlines for high-quality delivery, and coordination across multiple client representatives with varying decisions and concepts. CV Media & Signage deployed a dedicated team whose expertise and proactive approach ensured streamlined communication, project oversight, and timely delivery to meet client expectations.

Big W selected CV Media & Signage for their unmatched ability to respond promptly and professionally to complex, evolving projects. With over 45 safety line marking projects, 20 external rebrands, and two 2.0 store re-images already completed, CV Media & Signage continues to support Big W’s vision.
