About

Sunshine Coast University Hospital (SCUH) is a major tertiary teaching hospital in Birtinya serving the broader Sunshine Coast and Gympie regions. Downer Group engaged CV Media & Signage to upgrade the hospital’s internal wayfinding system, working in collaboration with Humanics Collective as the design consultant. All activity was completed in a live hospital environment, requiring careful coordination to maintain safety and continuity.

The hospital’s original signage package, installed in 2016, included more than 15,000 items. The new program required the removal of legacy components, comprehensive accessibility upgrades and the installation of a fully compliant new signage system throughout public access areas.

Project Delivery

CV Media & Signage delivered a comprehensive signage and wayfinding program that included painting, sign prototyping, sign manufacture, installation, digital directories, sign removals and all associated make good works. The scope extended across multiple hospital zones, each with unique operational requirements and sensitivities.

The project required close coordination with Downer Group, Humanics Collective, SCUH and Queensland Health representatives to ensure all works aligned with clinical needs, safety standards and hospital stakeholder expectations.

Painting Works

The project included repainting approximately 550 surfaces using 18 paint types across bulkheads, receptions, stairwells, waiting rooms, staff stations and amenities. Bulkheads alone accounted for 238 sections. Specialist preparation was required for lift lobby ceilings and threshold graphics.

Sign Manufacture and Installation

Approximately 3,600 new signs were manufactured and installed across 60 types, based on Humanics Collective’s design specifications. These included room and door IDs, braille and tactile directional signs, background graphics and directional flags, along with directory boards and intercom plates.

Braille and Tactile Signage

Around 1,800 braille and tactile signs were produced across twelve compliant sign types, including raised letter room IDs, door IDs, wall mounted and lift mounted directional signs, toilet identifiers and tactile lift lobby maps. An independent access consultant audited prototypes, manufacturing methods and installation practices to verify luminance contrast, tactile legibility and full accessibility compliance in accordance with relevant Australian Standards.

Digital Hospital Directories

Two digital directories were integrated into the system to support clearer hospital navigation. The first directory is positioned at the main entrance and features three synchronised screens delivering dynamic wayfinding information for incoming visitors. The second directory is located at the carpark entrance and comprises five screens, providing both wayfinding detail and designated space for advertising and community engagement messaging. Together, these digital assets support SCUH with flexible, high visibility communication tools.

Sign Removal and Make Good

More than 1,000 legacy signs were removed, covering adhesive fixed, modular and mechanically installed units. Make good works were essential to restore surfaces and ensure a clean base for new installations.

Digital Project Management

SignAgent and ClickUp were used to track every item through design coordination, procurement, installation and approval. With thousands of signs, varied technical requirements and a large volume of removals, structured digital management was essential. The system provided Downer Group with complete visibility and produced a full photographic audit trail for future maintenance.

CV Media & Signage delivered an exceptionally complex wayfinding upgrade at Sunshine Coast University Hospital, managing a high volume of signage works within a live clinical environment. Their attention to detail, strong coordination with stakeholders and ability to adapt to site conditions ensured the project was delivered safely, efficiently and to a high standard. The outcome is a clear, compliant and cohesive wayfinding system that has significantly improved navigation throughout the hospital. Giovanni Cercone, Program Delivery Manager, Downer Group

Challenges and Considerations

Delivering the project in a live hospital environment required strict adherence to safety, infection control and noise protocols. High public foot traffic meant most installation works occurred from 4pm to midnight, improving safety and minimising disruption. Two large murals, each approximately nine metres by eight metres, were installed on opposite sides of a high traffic stairwell. The height and location required specialist scaffolding solutions, and each elevation was isolated and completed over a dedicated week to ensure safe access management and smooth execution with minimal disruption to hospital operations.

Real world site conditions created ongoing technical challenges, including substrate differences, concealed services and geometric inconsistencies. Nearly 400 RFIs were raised and resolved through weekly coordination meetings with Downer Group, Humanics Collective and SCUH. Regular onsite inspections ensured issues were addressed quickly and installation progress remained steady. High quality make good works were crucial to achieving a consistent final presentation across all hospital areas.

Outcome

The completed program delivered a modern, compliant and cohesive wayfinding system that reflects the capability and attention to detail of CV Media & Signage. The upgraded signage has significantly improved clarity, consistency and accessibility throughout SCUH. Through strong collaboration with Downer Group and effective management of complex onsite conditions, CV Media & Signage successfully delivered a high volume, technically detailed project within a sensitive operational environment.
